Ojibwe: The Return of the Scone Dog

Pow Wow Café – 213 Augusta Ave, Toronto, ON M5T 2L4
Country: Ojibwe
(Cash Only)
Seating: Limited indoor and outdoor seating
Must-try dish: Scone Dog
The high: The sun was shining and we were able to enjoy our scone dogs in the nearby park.
The low: Pow Wow Café was only offering the scone dogs on April 8th as they have been temporarily closed during most of the pandemic.

Pow Wow Cafe was the subject of Eat the World TO’s first post back on June 3rd 2019. We wanted to start close to home and feature Indigeounous cuisines to get things rolling on our adventures. Over the course of the pandemic, this hidden gem has remained shut for the most part, and had a one day pop-up in early April to satiate its loyal followers.

On April 6th, news broke via their instagram account that they would be hosting a three hour lunchtime Scone Dog pop-up in a couple days time. Needless to say, everything was dropped and Mandrea Bike arrived in Kensington Market just in time for lunch in the sun. Due to regulations forbidding both indoor and outdoor dining across Toronto, the benches in the park were the perfect alternative.

The scone dogs provided no disappointment – they were delicious as always. If you’re unfamiliar with this delight, it’s essentially a souped-up Pogo. The hotdog is on the stick and it’s covered in crispy deep-fried batter. It must be noted, a Scone Dog trumps a Pogo any day but there are certain similarities.

There were two options available for this exclusive Scone Dog Pop-Up: The Naked, which is lathered with yellow and red sauce (fancy Mustard & Ketchup) or the Supreme, which is topped with yellow and red sauce, cheese, lettuce and herbs. A last minute addition to the meal was  the Sweet Grass Tea. This sweet, yet earthy warm beverage helped us wash the food down, while observing the eclectic happenings in the Market at the same time.

As businesses continue to struggle during the Ontario Covid-19 lockdowns, we urge everyone to support their favourite restaurants. We’re coming too close to losing the multicultural collection of dining establishments that make up our special city.

Eat with you soon,

Mandrea Bike
