Canadian Bacon isn’t just a hilarious film with John Candy, it’s also a real life thing. Behold Peameal Bacon, Canada’s unique and delicious style of pork.

Any tourist who visits the 6ix is likely going to make their way to historic St. Lawrence Market to enjoy a peameal bacon sandwich from Carousel Bakery. It’s a staple, and it’s not worth missing out on. The sandwich is served on a fresh bun that’s stuffed with a generous amount of peameal bacon pieces. You can have it as it comes, or there are condiments to enhance it. Not surprisingly, the Amazing Maple Mustard is strongly recommended. But you can make it your own. The sandwich itself is enough for a meal, but you may not be able to stop at just one!

Peameal bacon comes from the back of the pig loin – it’s wet-cured, removed of fat and rubbed with cornmeal then it’s ready to cook. It takes on a pinkish colour, and unlike strips, peameal bacon has significantly less grease and is more dense. It’s full of flavour and a perfect addition to breakfast, bread or the sides of your choosing.

Although it’s an attraction for visitors, peameal bacon is adored by Canadians, especially in sandwich form.

Don’t worry, we didn’t forget – Happy Canada Day to Canadians and Canadian enthusiasts worldwide. May your beer never be empty, your speakers blaring The Hip and your barbecues roaring.

Eat with you soon,
