Heavenly Perogy – 400 Bathurst St, Toronto, ON M5T 2S6
Country: Ukraine
Seating: Only inside seating is available in the basement of the church.
Must-try dish: Chicken Schnitzel with Perogy and Coleslaw
Dinner guests: Pornstar Sam & Young Matt
The high: The portion sizes were perfect, so you don’t leave feeling stuffed like you might expect with this style of food.
The low: It’s quiet in the space without any music, but this likely has to do with the restaurant being inside of a church.

Heavenly Perogy first appeared on our radar during a Federal Election as there was a voting station in the basement of St. Volodymyr’s Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral on Bathurst Street. The restaurant operates in the humble kitchen of the church with a few tables dressed in red tablecloths and bouquets of flowers at the centre of each. Despite having dine-in and catering options available, the takeout side of the business seems to be thriving.
The owner is a woman who’s a member of the congregation, and she started cooking as a volunteer, but soon after she was able to develop a culinary enterprise. Although both the food and the service were top-notch, we especially loved the name that incorporates the religious home of the business with its most popular food item.
Let’s get to the food, as it was indeed heavenly tasting. It’s difficult to not speak of the praise of the Perogy game here – if you eat in, there are two options: Potato & Cheese, and Mushroom & Sauerkraut. Both are worth tasting, as even haters of fungi would take to these mushroom and sauerkraut dumplings. If you’re thinking about taking a bag of frozen perogies home for a rainy day, there are additional options such as Potato & Onion, and Potato & Cottage Cheese.
All the main dishes come served with five perogies in the flavour of your choice, and a lightly dressed coleslaw salad. The Chicken Schnitzel came highly recommended, and it was actually our favourite dish of the night. There’s no going wrong with a big piece of fried chicken and perogies.
The Pork Skewer comes with two deep-fried pieces, and there’s also a chicken option. This dish was good but paled in comparison to some of the other ones like the Sausage plate, which came grilled with the usual accompaniments and it takes on the shape of a smile. Finally, the Cabbage Rolls. We ordered the meat option that came soaked in a tangy red tomato sauce. There’s something about a cabbage roll that is reliable in taste and flavour, no matter where it comes from.
There was no denying that the group were perogy aficionados, so the Blueberry Perogies acted as our night cap. Picture a regular perogy but instead of having a savoury topping inside, there is a compote or a jam. They’re served hot with sour cream. Delicious!
On this occasion, we didn’t get the Ukrainian-style Borsch, nor any of the other soups, which are all vegan. But we did take note of the variety of vegan options on the menu, in case anyone wants to the vegetable Cabbage Roll route. Meat or not, Heavenly Perogy is open all days of the week except on Sundays so it’s incredibly easy to satisfy a perogy craving.
Eat with you soon,
