Each diner creates their own adventure at this traditional Dim Sum restaurant in Chinatown. It’s that old-school style of place where carts pushed by the servers are constantly cruising around the dining room with fresh dishes to order, no menus needed. Because of this, a diner just tends to order what looks good as it passes the tables and there often isn’t awareness of what exactly is on the table. Beware, eyes are always bigger than your stomach here!
The Dim Sum King of Toronto specializes in all things Dim Sum, though dumplings are always a hit and it was the easiest way to start our Sunday lunch – pork and shrimp dumplings. We started with the pork-only variety, and they were ultimately the favourite of the meal but the pork and shrimp combination, and the shrimp are also worth ordering.
A contender for the must-try dish was the rice noodle plate in a soy-sauce based dressing. Nothing more was explained other than it was made with rice noodles and meat, but the mystery kept things more exciting as we tasted it.
Naturally greens were required for colour and an appearance of health. The classic Chinese string beans are a delight at any time of the day, and during this lunch they were especially enjoyed. At first glance the pork was missing, but for anyone who’s patient, all the good stuff was hidden at the bottom.
We also ordered pork with an exterior so crispy it almost cracked a tooth and chicken wings fried to perfection. Last of the order were the Steamed Rice Rolls and the Fried Spring Rolls. Each looked tempting and added diversity to the meal. Despite being good, the dumplings and the noodles were the stars of the show at this Dim Sum brunch.
Dim Sum King Seafood Restaurant was Mandrea Bike’s first experience eating Dim Sum for the blog. The goal was to highlight somewhere central in the city that people can easily meet up over the weekends. This restaurant does get busy but the dinning room is quite large, has long hours, and also offers take-out and delivery. That being said, the in-restaurant experience is special because of the exposure to new things that may not be a first choice on a menu but look tasty when carting around next to your table. And for the adventurers at heart, have fun tasting new things.
Eat with you soon,
Mandrea Bike
