Toronto’s bulgogi experts are located right downtown at Bob’s Bulgogi. Bulgogi is a famous South Korean dish centered around thin slices of meat, and the word translated into English as “life meat”. It operated mostly as a takeout destination, but there are a few stools for customers wanting to eat in. We opted to take over one of the bar tables to eat the meal family style, mostly standing up.
Bob’s menu is set up in a way that you pick a protein, a base, and the level of spice for your bulgogi. The proteins are beef, shrimp, chicken, or tofu, while the base options are rice or noodles. Mild or spicy determine the level of heat in the dish.
This was our order:
- Shrimp Bulgogi on Noodles (mild)
- Chicken Bulgogi on Noodles (spicy)
- Tofu Bulgogi on Noodles (mild)
- Beef Bulgogi on Rice (mild)
- Chicken Bulgogi on Rice (mild)

The group consensus was that the Chicken Bulgogi on Noodles was the best of the bunch. It was a little spicier than the rest and the noodles paired well with the meat. Beef Bulgogi is the most traditional, and although it was good on rice, it likely would have been better with noodles. Adding a little spice to these dishes would have likely also enhanced them but they were flavourful in the mild spice form. We also appreciate that there’s a vegan option available with the tofu for our plant-based friends.
The other Korean dish on Bob’s menu is Bibimbap, which translated into English means ”mixed rice”. Not surprisingly, it’s a rice based dish with pickled vegetables, protein, and topped with an egg. It typically has a dollop of hot sauce on it, so spicer haters beware!
There was one Bibimbap order with beef that was a nice change of scenery from the bulgogi dishes. It was colourful and felt healthier because of the vegetables mixed within it.
Bob’s Bulgogi decided to do one thing well, so it’s no wonder why it’s such a popular place to get food. The dishes are also made quickly so it’s an excellent meal over lunch time when you want something fast and delicious between meetings. Bob’s is just one more reason to love South Korean food.
Eat with you soon,
